I am a gay male, and I know a lot of people at my gym. Occasionally, men whom I’ve assumed or known were straight have come up to me and asked me out for drinks. I should point out that while I’m not closeted, most people are shocked to find out that I am gay as I don’t exhibit many of what they consider to be ‘stereotypical’ gay traits. My concerns are that (truly) straight men will think I assume they are gay and that I think they are coming on to me if I tell, and that if I don’t tell and they find out later they will worry that other people might think they were gay or that I was secretly coming on to him. To gay men: Do you tell? Why and how? To straight men: Would you rather know up front? Would finding out later make you feel ‘weird’?
