JanetParticipantIt seems as though when something bad happens to a person who is in a minority category–whether it be racial, ethnic, religious, or gender–there is a certain segment that automatically ascribes any bad thing to the minority status. Everything from being bumped on the street or getting bad service in a restaurant, up to being passed over for a promotion or fired, is because they’re not a WASP male. Particularly in job matters, blacks and women seem to think they’re fired or passed over for a promotion because of their race or gender. I once worked at a place where a black man swore he was fired because he was black (never mind that it was his black manager who decided to fire him), and it never occurred to him that his being late to work every single day he didn’t call off may have been a factor. Not denying that racism and sexism still exist, why is it that some members of minority groups automatically assume that everything bad happens to them because of racism/sexism and never seem to consider that it might be at least partially because of their personal competence?
