Anna P.ParticipantAre bartenders more likely to work less than other workers?

BenParticipantDo you mean work fewer hours, or do less labor WHILE at work? I have several friends who have been bartenders, and they were all part time, however the bars that they worked at DID have full time bartenders – usually the owner. As for doing less while working, it all depends on how busy the place is. If there are few customers and the place is clean, then there isnt much to do.

B23452ParticipantMy boyfriend is a bartender in the city and he works all the time. In fact, he works more days a week than I do. If it’s length of time you’re asking about, he works regular 8 hour days, just later at night.

Kevin L.MemberAll of the bartenders I know work multiple jobs. Most are students during the day and tend at night. A few work other jobs but take shifts behind the bar to supplement income. I would surmise from this that the bartenders are probably working more.

JenniferParticipantYes, in that they usually make a handsome wage because of tips. Somewhere between $25-40/hour and upwards if in a high-volume club. So yes, they can work less days. But, NO, they work really hard when on the job. There’s a lot of heavy lifting (ice/kegs/cases of liquor/wine), standing on your feet for 8 hours straight, washing and unloading dishes, listening politely to boring patrons, emptying trash, sweeping the floor, and constant cleaning, and when it’s busy, you have to move rapid fire which can be exhausting. Then, when you get home at 2am, you’re wide awake and can’t sleep. So it’s particularly hard work.
