Cathy-LParticipantI read in a travel book that in parts of Australia, finishing a drink and putting a glass upside down on the bar means you think you can win a fight with anyone present. Why would that be so, and what parts of Australia does this happen in?

NettaParticipantI’m sorry, but I couldn’t help but laugh at this. Look, just don’t trust anything any travel book ever says about Australia. It might be true, but there’s a 95% chance that someone is bullshitting you every time. If you want to know the truth, come to Australia, observe, and keep your mouth shut until you work it out. Basically, people know nothing about Australia, and it seems a lot of the time they don’t want to know anything real about Australia, so Australians (like me) get over it and spread funny stories to get a laugh. Might seem weird, but oh well. Think about it. Why WOULD you want to just go to a pub and advertise that you think you can fight anyone? A person who did that would just jump right in and start swinging.

JadeMemberFrom my knowledge it doesn’t happen anywhere. I am really sick of Australians being potrayed as druken,Croccidile hunting, bush louts. If you come to Australia, especially Sydney or Melbourne, you will find a worlds class city with a cosmopolitian life style. Even country towns don’t have fights in pubs. All pubs have satilite TV to show boxing and not have brawls in the bar

roger29609ParticipantBar fights or ‘pub brawls’ occur generally in the rougher pubs in whatever city or area of Australia. Verbal threats are more common in starting a fight than placing a glass upside down.

PW30310ParticipantI’ve never seen this happen, but then again I’m not the sort of guy who goes looking for fights in bars… I suspect that this might be one of those things that are true only in particular bars, or in particular groups of people. It’s definitely not a universal thing here (I’d not heard of this until now).

jade21048Participanti highly doubt that this happens anywhere in Australia. definately in the major citys or even the country towns. if you start a fight in a pub or bar or even night club, you will be kicked out in a split second by the bouncers. crocidille dundee was a tounge in cheek movie of aussie steriotypes….not the truth

Bill AndersonMemberI have travelled throughout much of Australia and this is the first I’ve heard of this quaint tradition. I’ve seen this kind of thing in American movies of the Western genre.

Jade19458ParticipantPerhaps you should invest in a proper travel guide. As far as I know this doesn’t happen anywhere in Australia.
