Ferre G.ParticipantWhat do people of other countries know about Antwerp and Belgium? What items, products and sentiments get linked to it? Beer? French fries? Chocolate?

Eric25187ParticipantThe thing that comes to mind is Belgian beer. While not wildly popular in the states, it is known as being a unique style. People who homebrew their own beer are usually aware of this import from Belgium. Having not had the opportunity to visit your country, that is all I’m familiar with.

MarianneParticipantAntwerp does have good beer, chocolate, french fries, and food in general. It also has a small but very fashionable shopping area–quite a chic little city! I think of Antwerp as being currently vital, while being historically rich. It is one of my favorite places to visit, in part because of the museums and churches. I associate Antwerp with Rubens, dominance in the Netherlands prior to the ascendence of Amsterdam, and Catholicism.

John-FParticipantI’ve been there, so I do not have the typical American concept of that area, but I think people think of chocolate, NATO, waffles … and that’s about it.

PW30311ParticipantNever been there, but the first things I think of in relation to Antwerp are diamonds & Stella Artois beer (which is, I have to add, not bad at all). Belgium in general: small, quite rich, good international reputation for UN/humanitarian work, moderate socialist type government (I’m not from the USA, so ‘socialist’ is a good thing). Similar to Netherlands in many ways, but slightly more conservative for drug/social laws.

RichardParticipantI know that it is the premier port of Belgium and that the city was terribly destroyed during World War II. I also know that besides Amsterdam & Rotterdam, it was also the home of Flemish art and was particularly well known for its skilled tapestry weavers. I have seen fine examples of these tapestries called ‘gobelins’ displayed at Wawel Castle in Krakow, Poland.
