Why do so many young men have to have those loud boom radios in their cars, and loud noisemakers on the exhaust pipes?

Basically it’s a way of showing they have money to spend on these things (even if they have to miss a few bills) that other people find desirable. Now, why they find them desirable I have no idea.

I think it is just a way to get attention. It may show how insecure many young males are.

It’s not just men who have cars like that. I was riding in a female friend’s car and could barely hear myself think because of the booming. She couldn’t even tell what song it was, just liked having a really loud thumping that everyone on the street noticed. It’s all about status, like owning the biggest mansion in a movie star neighborhood or having the biggest army as ruler of a country. The mansion doesn’t mean you’re the richest, it just looks like it. The army doesn’t mean you’re the strongest, it just looks like it.

They desire attention. If the noise their cars make is so loud that it can’t be ignored, then everybody’s heads will turn and they will have achieved their goal. I also agree with another poster that it’s about showing off what their income can buy.

Did anyone know that bigger (yes, they are louder) exhaust equals more horsepower (2-3 to the wheel). That’s the reason most people get them, not because they want to be loud and get attention. Modifying your car is all about making it unique (and fast). This issue has nothing to do with age, but rather with passion. How many 50-year-old men and women are driving around in Corvettes or Vipers? They share the same passion for speed as teens with imports. As for the amps and systems, it just gives the music so much more power. When you hear your favorite song I guarantee you will crank it up and sing (if there are lyrics) your heart out. If you don’t like their music, who cares, they probably don’t like yours, either.

When I was in high school, this was very popular among the boys. You also tend to see a lot of this in the South. Most guys around here don’t drive brand new trucks as their first vehicles so they try to make them stand out or ‘cool’ by adding all these special additions. They grow out of it immediately when they go to college and realize nobody does that sort of think anymore.

I like loud music in my car, however, I believe that loud music is a way of expression. When I was younger we used that strategy to attract the girls. So, having the loudest music with the newest song got the most attention. Now, with the exhaust pipes, I think it’s being used to intimidate other cars that actually have the horsepower to back it up.

As for the stereos, when they are louder and more intense it feels more like you are hearing the band live, like the band is playing in your back seat. As for exahuast, depending if you are working a tuner or a hot rod you can gain as much as 15 to 20 hp at the rear wheels. As for being age-related most car shows I go to the older people have louder exhausts than I do and they have it to show off and have fun so I do not think it is an age-related thing.

The loudness of the stereo or exhaust depends on the person. If it is 10 below and someone drives by and the window is down with the radio cranked they are looking for attention. Whereas some people just crave the loud music and pulsing bass, some even use their cars in competitons. On the other side with the exhaust the answer is very similar: Some do it for the performance of the vehicle: it is much quieter and a creates good, toned sound. Others do it because they see how much attention the people with loud trucks and cars are getting so they want a piece, too. It is very simple to tell who those people are. They are the ones with the sound so loud and obnoxious that it makes you want to kick a dog.
