In my school’s chess club, four of our five best players are athletically inclined. I swim, one of the others plays basketball, one football and one runs track. Yet people in the school still think of chess as a weak man’s game. Why?

I am one of the top players in my school’s chess club and I am on the diving team, so I know what you mean. I think it comes down to envy. Chess takes a lot of mental skill, and not everyone wants to put the effort into it, so they feel that they have to put down the people who do. This is similar to the misconception that all athletes are stupid. It’s just a stereotype.

The definition of sport is not ‘something physical which people compete in’ as it is stereotyply referd as. But ‘Something that is competitve which people compete at’. Which Chess is. But its because there is only a trace of physical performance in it (moving the pieces). The rest is all spiritual and mental.

The reason that they think chess is a weak man’s game is because they haven’t played it or they’re just not good at it. I attend chess tournaments in my region and often come out in high standing, but I used to be on the school track team when I was in high school. The stereotypical nerd is far and between now days I think.
