This has been bothering me for years: Many blacks I have spoken to believe that Asians serve cat meat in their Chinese restaurants. For this reason, some blacks only order shrimp or sometimes beef dishes in Chinese restaurants, and especially avoid chicken dishes. The theory is that Asians will serve cat to save money, because they hate blacks or because they eat cats themselves. Having worked in a Chinese restaurant, I don’t believe this at all, and have tried unsuccessfully to convince them of otherwise. Have other blacks heard of this conspiracy theory? Do you or someone you know believe it? If so, why? Do other races believe this? Can Asians comment on why and how this got started?

I have Chinese and Korean friends who have confirmed that in China and Korea, dogs are eaten, though I’ve never heard anything specifically about cats. I always figured if they eat dogs in their home country, why wouldn’t they eat them here?

There are animals that are raised for food, and then there are pets. One should not eat pets.

I have also read that Chinese restaurants have substituted turkey for chicken because it’s less expensive. I believe Asians will cut corners, though.

She tells me that only the very poor and desperate eat dog meat when they have no other choice, much like some poorer people in this country used to eat horse meat. Also, housecats are extremely rare, outside of a few Westerners who brought theirs with them. (They do have another type of cat that is about twice the size of a housecat and has no tail.) So with no housecats to kill, why would they turn to eating a strange animal? This story, especially the ‘conspiracy’ claim, sounds like an urban legend that some people made up to promote racism toward Asians.

All cultures have their share of rather unusual and ‘nasty’ (by our own ethnocentric standards) foods. Icelandic people eat putrefied (half-decomposed) sharkmeat and pickled buffalo testicles. Thais are rumored to eat huge bugs and cockroaches. Northern Chinese enjoy turtle soup and scorpion meat. Kenyans eat Monkey meat and brains. And yeah, Koreans used to eat dog, although the younger generation, having adopted Western lifestyles and values, consider it low-class and barbaric. It looks like a trend that will die out with the old generation. But anyway, the list goes on and on. Its not just Asians who eat funky stuff. White people and black people around the world eat all kinds of funky stuff, too.
