RaillanMemberWhy do Asians think of white people with such high regard, and think so little of black people? In gay chat rooms over the years, when I enter the Asian chat area as myself, I never get a response, but when I change only my race to white (leaving everything else the same), I am bombarded with instant messages from every Asian in the room – about a hundred out of the hundred or so times I’ve been in chat rooms. Even in public, recently, when I was at a bathhouse in Toronto, between myself (36, 6’1″, 210 lbs., muscular body) and a white male( 50+, 5’8″, 300+ lbs.), the white male got all the attention and affection!

Cynthia31772ParticipantAsians in North America are, for the most part immigrants or first generation born. For immigrants, the only exposure they have to blacks prior to arriving is through movies and television, and usually these images are not positive. They tend to pass these values on to their North American born children. Many do not live in areas that have a large black population and many who own small businesses have been robbed by black men. Also, like European culture, Asian cultures tend to value fair skin, which indicates that one is high-born. The darker the skin, the lower-born one is. Hope this helps.

JP-SchumiParticipantWhat do see on your local news every night? How do black people portray themselves on Television. Only the most negative images of black people are portrayed, therefore a lot of black people pick up on this and think of it as what it means to be black. For someone new to this country who isnt impressed with this, its easy for them to paint with a broad brush.

Randall F.MemberUnfortuantly most don’t I’m here in China i get the same thing you get in Toronto with the women that you get with the men. We are considered lower class and connected with poor african countries. To the general public we are considered lower-class. Besides this Black is ugly to most of the Chinese. I’m called nigger all the time in China. There are some that look beyond this. I’ve had a couple of girlfriends here, but compared to the White people forget about it. I’m also handsome and muscular too. Just too dark. IF you don’t get lucky perhaps in another life man. Thats how the world is. The only thing valued higher than white is green know what i mean?

Roy29500ParticipantI myself am married to a black women. Do all Asians hold blacks in disregard? The assumption that this statement is true, would in itself, be a stereotype. However, I suppose that a variety of factors could explain some of the behavior you have seen. Environmental factors such as social acculturation can be one answer. Media has always portrayed white as being more desirable. This is evidenced in everday commercials depicting glamorous white models or even light-skinned blacks. Race-power relations relative to societal heirarchy can be another factor. Or, the people you have had such experiences with could be ignorant or prejudiced, or a combination of both. It is a disappointing world we live in.

SagittariusMember… for your snub in the bathouse (are you for real)? If your question is genuine (I asked two asian friends) and they say that the fear of black men, especially teenagers, is the cause. They have been robbed, beaten and more so often (urban areas) that they are truly intimidated and scared. The biggest gripe, according to them, was that blacks resent their success. During the Watts riots, Asian businesses were targeted far more than any other.

John BoevinglohParticipantIt is not just Asians. Unfortunately, it is because of a fear of VD & crime associated with the young black males.

Jim30707ParticipantCan’t really account for the gay part of it, but my wife is chinese and in china the lighter you are the better. A light woman is much preferred over a darker tanned woman, even if the darker woman is prettier. They do not understand why someone would go to a suntanning salon and pay someone to make them darker.

KageParticipantI myself am an Asian who does not hold a high regard for whites, however I do acknowledge that there are some Asians who prefer whites over everyone else, including other Asians. The best way I can explain it is that in Asia, there is a feeling that Westerners, aka Whites, are rich or powerful. This sentiment goes back to the days when Europeans brutalized and colonized many parts of Asia. Asians are also bombarded by hundreds of commercial media depicting predominantly white models, actors, etc. In fact, when I visited recently, most of the billboards and advertisements I saw depicted Whites. This offended my greatly because it seemed wrong to have ads depicting whites in a nation of Asian people.

W.C.MemberFirst off, I dont put anybody on a pedestal at first glance, but being raised in an traditional second generation asian family, certain stereotypes are implanted into your mind when growing up. I dont know if you are referring to ‘relationships’, but when I brought home a black/Spanish/white girl, mom looked really dissapointed in me because it was anything but Asian. At least when it came to my mom, she was thinking about the children we would have in the future and the problems they will have being of mixed descent, but I dont think that will be a problem since the times are changing. Oh, Asians dont like anybody… we tend to keep to ourselves and mind our own damn business… No offense dude…

BertoMemberBrutally honest? I think most gay/bisexual people find black people least attractive in the same-sex hierarchy. It sucks. You just gotta suck it up, I guess. Happy hunting.

Mr. SomeoneParticipantTo answer your question, Lots of Chinese do not seem to like dark people, on sixty minutes there was a documentary about that. When blacks went to stores to shop, the Asian people would tender the change by dropping it on their hands so they would not make contact with it. Besides look at how many Asian women go for Caucasian males, why not for any other males. Because they think dark skin is dirty.

Eastern21702ParticipantI believe that media has a whole lot to do with it. For example, a lot of American shows are translated in many asian countries. How the media portray blacks as gang members, or hustlers. Also, music industry is also responsible for it too. Another factor is that the fact that a majority of the world think ‘white is better’ as far as skin color goes. In Thailand, people will buy bleaching cream to lighten their skin. These are just some of my theories.
