KatherineMemberWhy does it seem to me that a lot of gays/lesbians/bisexuals are involved in ‘artsy’ activities? I find that if I want to find people of diverse sexualities, all I usually have to do is go to an art room at school or look for someone who dresses creatively. Does anyone else notice this, and why may it be so?

Daniel27221ParticipantIn my experience, it seems that with already having to contend with the prejudices of their lifestyle, they just feel more free and less afraid to express themselves in everyday activities. Of those I’ve known, it’s about a 50/50 split on if they’re creative or not, but the ones who are are much more open and active about it.

SaraMemberI agree with ur statement about how gay people are artsy. In my town we have a coffee shop that has alot of art in it. Alot of the gay people in my town hang out there. Also alot of the art schools in my area have many gay people. So, yes i agree with your statement. I think gay people are very interesting. Maybe art is a way of expressing themselves since they cant find other ways to. Who knows?

jackMemberbecause what you think you see is not accurate.. there are artsy gay people just like other artsy ‘straights’ you probably are exposed to artsy communities where gays are congregating.. and it also may be cause artsy peope are out in general and so more artsy gay people are out than non artsy gay people.. I think if all the gay people in the country came out…that you would find that the number of artsy gays was similar to the heterosexual population

BradMemberGays are involved in all activities from being artists to being a CEO. The difference is that gay people are allowed to be themselves in certain places and, conversely, must hide who they are in other plces, such as conservative corp. Amer.

Tom24145ParticipantWhat does it mean to be an artist. The most definite answer to this is to be able to express yourself. This creative expression every artist searches is found through intensive searches within themselves, their souls. They question common held beliefs and constantly shift their perspectives on life in general. Obviously, and as you have seen, this search leads to non-traditional sexual preferences. The fact that you tend to see these people only in the art room is because they are usually the only ones who have had the courage to find out about themselves. I am confident if you keep an open, observant mind you can spot the ‘closet freaks’ among the rest.

ThomasParticipantI believe part of that issue is that people who are a sexual minority are on the outside of the majority, looking in. That perspective allows the observer to have more to say about what goes on in society, because who they are allows them to constantly examine society and their place in it.
