Remember that old Saturday Night Live skit called ‘It’s Just Pat’, with the perpetually awkward scenes of Pat’s co-workers and friends trying to figure out if Pat is a he or a she?Working with the public, sometimes I come across someone whom I cannot tell is male or female. I do not know how to properly address them, figuring I’d have a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong and offending them. Even their names don’t help. Is there any polite and nonoffensive way to basically say ‘Excuse me, but are you a man or a woman?’
