Why do some young black males walk down the street or stand on a street corner holding their ‘privates’? They seem to be engrossed in touching themselves.

When you wear baggy pants, you soon learn that only by holding the crotch can you keep your buns from showing. Holding them by the belt loops makes it look like you’re tip-toeing. Baggy pants are ‘the style’ these days and belts are considered for the ‘old folks’. Some women love it and this is nothing new. Remember ‘Elvis the Pelvis’?

In slavery and much after that the only thing a Black man relly owned was his penis. To us it was a prized posession, only because when lynched that was the first organ cut off…along with fingers, toes, teeth and other parts so black men took pride in the fact that white people wanted it soo much that they would cut it off and keep it for themselves.(some people kept them in pickle jars as tokens)(some people still have them) So whenever a Black man would think less of himself he could feel between his legs for something so powerfull that a white person would kill him to get it and put it on his mantle.

If you really want to know it is a way of saying ‘Fuck you, I’m not even supposed to be here, but I am and I’m not like you and fuck manners and all that other shit you want me to internalize so I’m more like you.’ Many of us are uncomfortable here (America) and although petty, crotch grabbing is a way to add a little discomfort to your day. Or maybe I’m way off and it’s because many of us live in communities in which we are faced with mortality at young ages and, once this becomes our reality, feel as if we need to outwardly express our manhood in order to fend off those we feel pose a threat to our existence.

It’s poor home training. I am Black and have 3 teenage brothers and none of them do that. I think what started that whole thing was the belief about how good Black men are in bed. So a lot of teenage boys, who haven’t been taught better, feel like their privates are a matter of pride and power. Holding them is a way to draw attention to this ‘power’ that they supposedly have.

ALL men touch their privates. Color is irrelevant. Trust me, I’m in high school and constantly see it. Maybe it’s itchy, maybe they’re horny, whatever the reason, all men do it.
