I have recently begun teaching after 20+ years in several other fields, and I’ve been very disappointed to hear some (but not all, of course) African-American children berating other African-American children when they raise their hand and speak up in class, or even when they say they need to go study, and telling them to stop ‘acting white.’ I find this incredibly disturbing. Given all the disadvantages of centuries of institutional racism, I nearly despair to hear the main way out of poverty, education, be so disparaged. Trying to better one’s self is not a solely white trait.
