NancyParticipantI know that the word “nigger” is a race insult when used by a non-black person to a black person, perhaps the most provocative insult there is. I know it has a lot of history behind it. I read in a reference book that in the beginning it simply meant a black person and was not offensive, but over the centuries it certainly has taken on a lot of connotations!
I have heard black people call other black people “nigger” (both in real life and in movies) and it seems to mean something different in those circumstances.
Will somebody explain what this word actually means today? And how does the meaning differ when used by a black person to another black, as opposed to a white person saying it to a black person? Also, is it more provocative when used by a white person than it is by, say, a Hispanic or Asian or Native American? And if so, why? (I get the feeling that it is more when a white person says it, and the reason is history.)
