Dealing with others in awkward and touchy situations requires interpersonal skills honed by practice. It isn’t easy. Healing happens when two people or groups of people try to work things out together. Is today’s society turning into cyber- and techno-cowards? Technology has enabled us to behave impersonally and avoid direct face-to-face contact. Instead of resolving problems in person, or at least by phone conversation, we shoot the other person an email or leave a message on their answering machine when we know they’re unavailable. This relieves us of the need to respond in real time to the feelings of others. It may relieve guilt temporarily, but usually doesn’t heal wounds. So, what’s the solution? Any constructive ideas? Some religious, spiritual & 12-step

what context are you using for the ‘coward’ charge? I text my 60-something parents every day, I twitter, I.M., and e-mail my friends. I don’t do it because I’m a ‘coward’ who avoids personal interaction, I do it because I seldom have TIME in my day for a twenty-minute conversation about, basically, nothing. Technology enables me to keep up with what the people I care about are doing and lets them know that I’m thinking of them even when I’m juggling three projects and am running ten minutes late for the train!

Sadly we have become a society where employers demand 24/7 access to their staffs, parenting minor children has become nearly impossible (decline of public schools, etc.) and leisure time for most of us has diminished to almost zero. The ability to assure an anxious boss that you’re working from home on Sunday without actually having to pick up the phone is a godsend for some of us. Texting back and forth between parents stuck in meetings and traffic in order to make sure someone’s picking up the kids is also a useful tool. That is not to say it should take the place of face to face contact with those you wish to have real relationships with. It is difficult to judge whether technology has hastened the pace of the craziness or simply made it slightly more bearable.
