A cat asks about cat people

To everyone: What kind of person is a ‘cat person’? It seems to me that most people I know who like me are white. Do people of color have cats, too? People from countries other than the United States? Do women like cats more than men?

I don’t think there is any way to identify a ‘cat person’ other than whether they like cats. We have always had cats in my family. Most of the people in my extended family have cats. My husband, who is Mexican American, loves cats. His mom still has one that came home with my husband when he was a child. I guess whether you like cats depends a lot on whether you grew up with them. I have known many people from rural Mexico who do not understand why someone would have a cat as a pet because they don’t do anything to help out, whereas a dog can guard the property, help herd cattle, etc.

I think cat lovers tend to be quieter, calmer and more introspective than dog lovers. I think book lovers are more likely to be cat lovers than dog lovers. Extroverts seem to prefer dogs.

Shadow, to answer some of your questions: I am the ‘stereotypical’ cat person – white, female and artistically inclined. However, I have known Asians, Latinos and blacks who have had cats. I think there may be more white cat owners because more whites own their own homes – many renters are not allowed to have pets. It is true that more women than men like cats, but there seems to be a stigma attached to liking cats for men – cats are perceived to be ‘women’s pets’ and not ‘manly’ like, say, large dogs. Finally, yes, people in other countries own cats. I have corresponded with people in Brazil and India, among other places, who have owned cats. Pet ownership in general, however, is a luxury that many people in less-developed countries cannot afford.

I, too, am a stereotypical cat person. I have always had cats, and I probably always will. My parents have always had more than one cat. I remember when I went away to college and lived in the dorm, and I couldn’t have a cat. Well, let’s just say I moved ASAP. When my husband and I moved in together for the first time, I had just moved out of the dorm, and I was all hot to trot to get my new cat. Well, he was a Southern guy, more into dogs. He did not want a cat. But, being the girlfriend, I got the cat. And now it is HE who cannot be away from home for too long because the cat will miss us.

I don’t understand people who don’t like cats (it is fair to say I don’t trust them). Cats are independent and friendly, and they talk to you when you are lonely. Who could ask for anything more from a pet? Right now, we have three cats in our house. I treat them like my children; hell, they ARE my children! We love our babies immensely, and we take great care of them

My music teacher was never a cat person. However, at the age of 70+ a cat adopted him. It just turned up injured in his garden one day and wouldn’t leave him. To my knowledge, he is now a cat person … at least he thinks the world of that one, anyway. So I think anyone can fall for feline charms.

I’m white, female and ‘artistic,’ but I definitely prefer dogs. I have never liked cats – living in the country in Australia, I watch too many local cats eating the native wildlife. Also, I have never really understood the antisocial nature of the cats I’ve known. Dogs, unless they have problems, are generally incredibly friendly and loyal {and keep an ear out for intruders at night}. When I figured out a couple of years ago that I was allergic to cats, that sealed it for me. So I guess, in my definition, a cat person is someone who can overlook the scratches, the dirtiness, the moodiness and put up with a pet that can’t really be made to behave. And Shadow, my friend: of course people from other countries keep cats. People in Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand – just to name a few – also speak English, just like your owner, and lead surprisingly similar lives to them as well. We’re not savages, you know.

I worked at a no-kill shelter for animals, and we had all races of people coming in to adopt cats. My family has eight lovely spayed kitties. I personally hated cats up until about nine years ago when I met my ex-boyfriend. I fell in love with his two cats; then I started getting my own.

I can’t speak for other people, but as to why I’m a cat person, they were always around when I was growing up, and now I can’t imagine being without them. I have four. They’re loyal and lovable. When I was incapacitated by a recent injury, they would stay with me while I rested. When I’m down, they cuddle up. They are great listeners – and can’t talk to others about what you tell them.

You’ve pointed out one of the basic differences between cat people and dog people: dog people see cats are ‘anti-social’, cat people see them as independent. As a cat person (we’re down to 13), I’ve always felt that dogs gave their loyalty and affection too easily. Scratch his ears, feed him regularly, treat him with kindness and he’s yours. A cat, on the other hand, has to be wooed, repeatedly, probably because each is with the certain knowledge that he is one of God’s superior creations. ‘Stuffed mice, saucers of milk, and select portions of YOUR dinner are all very nice, but what have you done for me lately??’ Cats are very selective about who they love, and their criteria remains a mystery known only to theyselves. BUT, when a cat loves you, it’s whole-heartedly, unconditionally and for life. While cat people tend to be independent and basically unconcerned about how others view them, being adored by a cat is, to my mind, the ultimate accolade. You have been found _worthy_! When a cat brings you a dead mouse, this is tribute of the highest order. Cats are highly social critters (try doing a crossword or reading a newspaper when a cat wants to be social!)which, when in a group, form alliances, follow a determined pecking order, communicate, snuggle, squabble, share, steal from one another, give to one another, love, hate, play, tease, laugh, mourn. Given reasonable circumstances, cats are far more fastidious than their human companions. They are perpetually washing – themselves and you! A dog obeys because it’s in his nature to want to please. A cat learns quickly what is considered appropriate and inappropriate – by you. HE has different standards. When he does obey you, and ocassionally he will, it’s because he CHOOSES to, and for no other reason. But I’ve definitely strayed from the original question. I believe that it is the intrinsic nature of the individual rather than race, gender, religion, preference or even background which determines who becomes a cat person. (I grew up in a house without animals because my mother was very allergic. I thought cats were cats, big deal. Then, in college, I’d go drawing in Brooklyn on Saturday mornings with a teacher/friend and met her cats, each with unique foibles, aptitudes and attitudes. I was convinced that cats are people in little cat suits. I still am.)

I HAD 2 CATS WHO LIVED TO BE 15 & 16 AND THERE ARE MANY TIMES WHEN I THINK OF THE LOVE AND COMPANIONSHIP THEY BROUGHT ME. I SINCERELY HOPE IT IS TRUE THAT EVENTUALLY WE WILL ALL SEE OUR BELOVED PETS AGAIN! bye~~

I am black, I adore cats, my father always believed in having cats in threes so they could form a pack and I have just fallen in love with a stinky old Pekinese that I took in when his owner moved.. AND before I bought my house, I and many other renters of all ethnicities SNUCK PETS IN!!! Maybe people just haven’t mentioned their pets because they don’t want their landlords to know, but trust me, there are LOTS of people who love animals… FYI, I found an old abolitionists’ book that showed that many restraints used on slaves were modelled directly after animal restraints…

I like cats and am a black male. I like other animals, too. Many people in the South have reservations about cats, especially some black folk I know.
