14- 24 how mature are they?

This is up here to ask the question of how young is too young and why is it alright for you to go after some one when your 17 1/2, but at 18 oh no thats bad. Now then my actual question is this; If you were intrested in someone and were under the impression that they were 16 and then found out that they were only 14 are you obligated to stop seeing them? And if so why? Why is it alright for girls to go out with older guys but weird if a older girl goes out with a younger guy. The specifics of this question are I was 17 1/2 and I was about to graduate HS when my friend introduced me to her friend who I assumed was around 16 if not 17. It was only after we had seen each other a couple of times that I found out she was fourteen, now understand she didn’t tell me she was sixteen I presummed that. I was really into this chick and despite her parents flat out disapproval of us seeing each other we continued to see each other. What is it that made it so wrong in this world of pop-teen celebs for me a very immature 17 going 18 to see a very nice 14 year old. Most marriages have years of age between them so at what age does age stop mattering. Also now when I got back from Fl. she was seeing someone else and that was fine cause it was not like we said we wetre exclusive. But as it turned out her and my best friend who has been 18 for 6 months now have been talking and turns out they like each other. But he feels the age difference is to great for anything to evolve. Do you think he should try, or not and why?
