Chris F.MemberI often hear about the 12 tribes of Israel. What are these 12 tribes? Do they still exist? Is there a good on-line source to learn more? I heard recently that the ‘Ashkeazi’ (sp) is one of the tribes. True? Needless to say I am not Jewish; I was raised Roman Catholic and am interested in comparative religious studies.

Dan27390ParticipantThe 12 tribes of Israel stem from the 12 sons of Jacob, who was named ‘Israel’ by God. Jacob was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham, who is considered the father of the Jews. Joseph, the youngest son of Jacob, brought his brothers and their families into Egypt during a famine, and there the Israelite nation started growing in number. By the time Moses came around, the Israelites numbered upwards of several hundred thousand, and each was divided into their respective tribe via geneology. Today the tribal lineages are lost, however, we do know that the knowledge was present in New Testament times because Jesus was of the tribe of Judah, and the Apostle Paul was of the Tribe of Benjamin. Ashkenazic Jews are modern day Hebraic Jews; that is, the same ethnicity (Hebrew) as the ancient Israelites were. They were present in Israel/Palestine long before the modern day nation of Israel was founded.

Priscilla30273ParticipantI am not Jewish either. However, from my limited knowledge, I can tell you that: there are Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews and those groups are not tribes, but different ways of practising Judaism, e.g. Ashkenazic Jews often come from central Europe and Sephardic Jews often come from Spain etc and different traditions have developed in different geographical areas.

Jesse-N30779ParticipantThe 12 tribes are the descendants of the 12 sons of Jacob. Tribal identity was important in the past for national administration, but following the dispersion, it lost its importance, and now few if any Jews know for sure what tribe they are from. Being Ashkenazi is something entirely different: Up until about 100 years ago, Jews in Europe (roughly from France to Russia and everything in between) were called Ashkenazi; everybody else (in Spain, North Africa, Middle East) were known as Sephardi. It’s a cultural difference; they had different customs, dialects, etc. Now, as people travel and move so much, the two groups are everywhere, but many people clearly identify themselves as one or the other.

Corey StokesMemberThe 12 tribes of Israel are not Ashkeazi, the reason I say this is because if you look in Genesis it says that the Ashkeazi came from Japhet which was a Gentile. The true Israelites are the African Americans. You might think Im crazy but if you read Deu.28:68 it will tell you and If you read the Willie Lynch Letter it corresponds with a passage in Isaiah. And if you read the teachings of Jesus, Jesus will say that a group of people will be hated and killed, and as you can see what happened after the civil war and the early 20th century it was the Afican Americans. A-Clark29568ParticipantThe sons of Jacob, later renamed by God as Israel: – Asher (son of Jacob) – Benjamin (son of Jacob) – Dan (son of Jacob) – Gad (son of Jacob) – Issachar (son of Jacob) – Joseph (son of Jacob/Israel) – Ephraim (son of Joseph) – Manasseh (son of Joseph) – Judah (son of Jacob) – Levi (son of Jacob) – Naphtali (son of Jacob) – Reuben (son of Jacob) – Simeon (son of Jacob) – Zebulun (son of Jacob) Two of the sons fell into sin and lost thier birthrigh, and were replaced by Joseph’s two righteous sons. They do exist today, and the LDS religion teaches that everyone is adopted or a literal desendant of each tribe, which can be revealed by revelation.
