Maybe you don’t feel inadequate and marginalized while watching a beauty pageant, but I do, and so does virtually every other woman I’ve ever talked to about this issue. This kind of activity sets up unrealistic expectations for millions of women and men, both who cannot compete with the physical beauty of the contestants of such pageants. Unfortunately, because contestants are celebrated for their physical attractiveness, it reinforces the view that only perfectly slim/muscular/beautiful/handsome people are worthy of consideration for a potential love or sex partner. And baby, there are a LOT more of us than there are of them.
