Regarding the diversity of appearance: Labels are often woefully inadequate. ‘White’ means nothing. It tells you nothing about anyone’s family, ethnic group, national origin, etc. You might guess a person is European, but not always be right. In the same vein, ‘Puerto Rican’ can mean First American, Caribe Indian, any of 30 West African countries, Portuguese, Spanish, French or British. All of these peoples are part of the historic population of Puerto Rico; hence, the variety of colors, features, etc. It works the same way for African Americans.
