For the same reason people go camping in the woods: to get closer to nature. You truly have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting attacked by something in the water (take it from a surfer). Just learn how to identify jellyfish or manowars, wear ‘footies’ so you don’t step on a stingray or coral or broken glass with bare feet, and don’t surf in areas with schooling fish, and you’ll be fine! Rip currents are actually more dangerous than any critter in the sea.
