Well, blacks are not ‘afraid of water’ per se, I mean, there are the people (of all races) who don’t like large bodies of water, or fear drowning. But I (being part of the black community) would say the #1 reason for black WOMEN not swimming is their hair. Most black women (unfortunately) relax (straighten their hair) with chemicals. And bleach water almost reverses the process, making their hair closer to the natural texture they are ashamed of. So they avoid water for risk of their hair ‘turning back’. Men, on the other hand like to swim fine as far as I know. But on the whole, I think it’s just that some black people don’t go to beaches/pools as much, or weren’t taught to swim as children, so they don’t swim. There’s nothing mystical about it.
