From what I’ve read of Scientology, it is a cult. Members are basically brainwashed, coerced into paying huge sums of money for the courses and encouraged to sever ties with friends and family who are not Scientologists. I think the skittishness and nervousness of people speaking out against Scientology is due to their aggressive attacks on anyone who speaks out against them. I can’t cite any of the lawsuits Scientology has filed against detractors; it’s been a long time since I’ve read the we bsite from which I get my information. But anyway, their beliefs, in a general, not-very-well-remembered nutshell are: humans are ‘possessed’ by the spirits of some kind of alien nasty beings, and the coursework’s aim is to get rid of these alien thingies. These alien nasties are somehow related to the Scientology big cheese, Xenu. It’s all very odd and science fictionesque, which is easily explained by the fact that the founder was the science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard, who was once quoted as saying something to the effect that ‘the best way to get rich is to form your own religion.’
