Danielle, perhaps I was not clear enough. I couldn’t care less about the subject of past discrimination. I was a freedom rider when I was very young, and I had black friends in grade school. The idea of black or not is of no interest. ‘Tell me who you are?’ is the famous Buddhist question. Is the persona black? Do I really need to hear about wrongs real, imagined and borrowed? It kills a conversation to hear such baseless things as ‘Blacks died out of proportion in Vietnam.’ It is simply not true. Most of the time these stories are just that: stories. Why are these things injected into the conversation?
