I think it has to do with change and the realization of older people that they are physically getting weaker and cannot defend themselves the way they were able to in their prime. Some years ago, my parents were uncomfortable riding a subway late at night with a group of teens sporting colorful mohawks. The hairstyles and dress of the youths were totally unfamiliar to my parents, thus the discomfort. This unfamiliarity (ignorance, though that’s a harsher word) leads to much prejudice and bigotry in this world.
