I am aware of two occasions when we prepare some form of welcome for Elijah – on Pesach (Passover) we pour an extra cup of wine for Elijah, and at a bris (circumcision) there’s often a chair for Elijah. My understanding of these customs is that Elijah is expected to announce the Messianic era and he is said to attend every bris.
