Islam prohibits adoptions outright. One can take a child and raise him/her as their own, and you have to spend as much money on them as your kids. This form of foster parenting means you can do anything except change their names or give them natural right of inheritance (although special wills can be written). The reason behind this is strange but logical: Islam says that adoption leads to loss of bloodline, which may lead to incest, i.e. a brother and sister may marry each other by accident because their birth names are lost. So in short, fostering is allowed under the condition that the child be treated as one’s own, but adoption is prohibited.
