I suppose the stereotype is because people tend to remember negative experiences more than positive experiences. The honest Gypsies are home working, going to school and being clean, so most people are only exposed to the thieving, dirty Gypsies. Also, there’s a long tradition in Europe of viewing Gypsies as ‘less than,’ and bad gypsy stories may have been passed down through generations of ‘Euro-Americans.’
