I am not having a go at anyone here, and some of the things that America stands for are very good (free choice, etc.), but this is an excellent example of the way people in the United States see themselves as the norm and everyone else as different. I think the question should be asked the other way: ‘Why do we Westerners celebrate birthdays?’, not ‘Why do other people not celebrate birthdays?’
