If you read my question, you'll see that I'm not saying that atheists have no morals. Even without a 'God' in someone's world-view, I can easily see why they would oppose theft, murder, lying, etc. In my experience, many (not all, however) people with some form of religion stop asking 'why?' and stop thinking about many issues, because they can just fall back on a religious authority, and they feel no need to justify their beliefs further. Since an atheist has no comparable authority, I would hope that they would think about their beliefs on many issues and have reasons that they could explain for why they feel the way that they do. So, what I am asking is what is the reasoning for an anti-homosexual attitude for those who don't have a religion to fall back on? What makes them consider it wrong?

Well, first of all, the bible also mentions Seth as a chilld of Adam and Eve, so there are actually three sons that we know of. Your question is usually answered in one, or both, of these ways: 1) God created other people apart from Adam and Eve. 2) Adam and Eve had more children, and they are simply not mentioned. Neither of these ideas is contradicted in the bible, to the best of my knowledge; there is much information and many details that we are simply not privy to.

I think that you're quite right. It amazes me how so many people pretend that they don't interpret the bible when, in fact, they do. There are literally hundreds of arcane laws that we dispense with, but some are held up as still applicable by those who claim to be biblical literalists. I trust that these people have the townfolk stone their disrespectful children and that they don't wear clothing made of more than one kind of fabric. You can't have your cake and eat it to!

I feel your pain. One of the greatest ironies to me is that people here will quote the bible to tell you that being gay is wrong (although there ARE alternate viewpoints on these passsages, but space, and my patience, are limited), but will stop short of taking the WHOLE bible literally. Children are not killed for disrespecting their parents, we don't think twice about wearing multi-fabric clothing, and most of us eat pork. There are hundreds of other examples, many of them QUITE outdated. I think that people should keep in mind that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality that is recorded in the bible (although he spoke out against divorce, for example...how many people really follow His teachings on that?). People view biblical acceptance of slavery as a nod to the culture of the times, and is considered absolutely abhorrent now; could not biblical prohibition of homosexuality be seen as, likewise, a cultural phenomenon? Who are homosexual people hurting, after all? And as for those who say that you cannot keep defying God (as you see it) and still be a Christian, I remind you that all of us will continue to sin, no matter how hard we try not to. Incidentally, the bible says nothing about female homosexuality; only male.

I'm sorry, but you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. JS Bach did NOT invent western music notation; it evolved over centuries and was in use in a recognizable form HUNDREDS of years before him. Western European music did NOT originate with pentatonic scales either; our major/minor system originated from modal music that can be traced to at least the 8th century, and some claim all the way back to ancient Greece. I know that this is not really the forum for this, but this is GROSS information and I feel the need to correct you.

I believe that I read somewhere that sexual acts tend to lead to emotional attachments simply because human beings are wired in that manner. Perhaps someone with more knowledge in that area can elaborate?
