I have to say it's probably the sudden or unexpected death of a loved one. The hardest things for me to deal with as a gay person are the same things that are hard for heterosexuals to deal with. Why would they be any different? Many people have a misconception that being gay is all we are, while it's really no more significant than being short or having green eyes. I'm sure that straight people don't always dwell on their heterosexuality ('Do these pants make me look straight?'; 'I wonder if people at work know that I'm straight?'; 'Wow! She's hot! I wonder if she's straight?'; 'Gee, we'd really like to get married, but we can't because we're straight.') I believe people who have questions and think we lead exotic, secret gay lives don't think they know any of us. They wonder where the gay people are and what the heck they're doing. Forget what you see on TV, in the movies or on the news. That's just hyped-up, blow-out-of-proportion junk. The reason you don't see us is because you're looking in the wrong place - the truth is that we're standing right in front of you. Real gay people are just the plain old boring people you see everyday...we go to work, mow the lawn, do some shopping, take the kids to soccer, throw in a load of laundry and sleep in on Saturdays. We are exactly like you.

It's not just straight people confusing homosexuals with pedophiles; it's everyone confusing pedophiles with anything but pedophiles. In your question you wrote that "most molesters are culturally defined as straight." So even you are confusing heterosexuals with pedophiles. Pedophilia has nothing to do with the normal, healthy attraction that people of appropriate ages have for each other - whether it's a 12-year-old boy and girl holding hands or some old lesbian couple running of to just about any country other than the US to get married. Pedophilia is a separate sexual orientation from any other - it's an adult who is sexually attracted to children. Neither the gender of the pedophile or the child matters - a man who abuses little boys is no more a pedophile than one who goes after little girls. And, while many pedophiles have a target age-range and gender that they prefer to molest, many are opportunists who will take advantage whatever kid is available if they think they can get away with it. Pedophiles are attracted to children and while they may have certain preferences, for many just about any kid will do. To compare that with heterosexuals and homosexuals, most have a certain "type" they're attracted to: blondes, body-builders, blue-eyes, hairy back, tall, short, skinny, fat, whatever. Now, while most healthy adults have a "type," they're generally willing to bend their rules if a good opportunity presents itself, i.e. a "boob man" may pursue a flat-chested girl if she'd got other qualities like. BUT, few and far between are the men who, when they can't find a girl that's their type, will turn to the guy on the next barstool and say, "Tag! You're it!" Bi-sexuality and drunken sorority girls and adolescent experimentation aside, heterosexuals and homosexuals stick to their gender-of-choice and select partners based on other variables. Pedophiles stick to their choice - children - and the gender of the child is often just a matter of opportunity. The majority of pedophiles may tend to be middle-aged and white, but they're only pretending to be heterosexuals to keep from being stoned or tarred-and-feathered. They can no more stop being attracted to children than straight men can stop being attracted to women.

Maybe because you're young, blonde, white and live in the mid-West in America. Most Americans who were born here and whos parents were bron here don't speak or understand any language other than American English. Why should we? The rest of the world already speaks English so why bother? If you were dark-skinned or there was something else about your appearance that didn't look corn-fed, people might not make that assumption. Likewise, if you lived in a state like California where English is spoken by a minority of the people, people might assume you speak Spanish or Tagolog or Vietnamese like everyone else here. Finally, what does understanding another language have to do with being dumb? I don't get the connection between intelligence and being multi-lingual. There are absolute geniuses in the world who speak and understand only the language of their native country, while George W. Bush is fluent in Spanish. 'Nuff said!
