The reply about the eurocentric standards of beauty are right on the mark. Also, keep in mind that this shows that Blacks see and describe each other accurately as individuals, while whites generally see Blacks as simply a monolithic Black. The ability to see the differences in color and features is something white s have to learn. This 'pecking order' of color has been in all American media - even Black Cinema. see htpp://astro.temple.edu/public_html/cc.htm

kristina, I'm a black male; and yes when it comes to looking at women from across the room, I have to say I am guilty as charged. Meaning I do tend to like fair skin women, atleast until I get to know them. This occurs more then blacks would like to admit, its so obvious; any attempt to deny that fact or to say otherwise, would simply be taken as some therapeutic measures to change the thinking of what seems to be more often then not, blackmen.

It is getting a little old to blame 'white folks.' I think black people should stop running and accept their responsibility in all this.

It is very disrespectful of Black people to tear each other down with discriptions of other Black people who have no control over the way that they looked when they were born. I understand that the media puts more into light-skinned Blacks, giving them the first movie roles, the first induction into colleges and etc., but those historic Black were putting a foot in the door for all Blacks, some taking very high risks that could've gotten them killed had anyone known they were Black. But they all came from the same dark-skinned mothers and fathers as we all did, and did what they could to see that their parents and children could finally rest a little easier. And the dark-skinned Blacks had a hard road because everyone knew they were black, and risked everything as well for their brothers and sisters that were birth by their Black mothers through rapes by the slave master. It's a shame that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Lorraine Handberry, and Crispus Attucks fought to their deaths that their people would become so self absorbed that they would literally have hate for one another. Black people don't even get along with other black people any more. Even our African brothers an sisters that just came over from the motherland, the Haitians that got dropped of on the islands, and those that went to Central and south America on the slave ships don't get along with us (or the other way around). The only difference in us is that we got droped off before they did. I don't know why such a petty thing like skin complexion and hair texture is letting Black people hate other black people, but once you have hate in your heart, it grows and manifests itself. People are being evicted out of homes because of the bulding of condos, the younger generations can't find housing or careers, and some continue this hateful light-dark war in their own lives. If the time comes where we all have to stand as a Black people together to fight for and die for our fredom again, will history repeat itself? If we're complaining over such trivial matters, who is going to lay down their life for us all when it comes time to fight a Civil War to free us the second time. They've already seperated the Blacks from the Blacks. All other races can live and work together but us. All I know is that if this does come to pass, dark and light will still be referred to as 'nigger'.

Joann, one reason to blame white people is that Hollywood and the fashion industry constantly hold up certain standards of 'perfection', and , as most of their paying customers are white, it tends to be a white standard. Of course black people shouldn't buy into it, but lots of white people are influenced by the media and culture at large, why not other groups. Rhonda, I agree with you entirely. I'm a straight white guy and I always find a black woman, or an Indian, Chinese or Philippine woman far more attractive if she looks like a healthy member of her own race than if she's messed herself about turning herself into a second-rate copy of a white girl. It's not just a black thing either. I live in Hong Kong and so many of the Chines women have similar hangups. They pay people to take sharp implements to their eyelids! Stupid. I mean when was the last time you heard a man say, 'Fwoar! Look at the eyelids on her!' ? And do-it-yourself Micheal Jackson kits for acid burning the skin to a chalky whiteness are really popular. Swarthy Chinese women are often afraid they'll look like Filipinas, you see, and Filipinas are mostly servants here, and as a result get a lot of the same attitudes that Black 'help' traditionally get in the US, i.e. they are simultaneously called lazy and dirty and and trusted to do all the cleaning up and work all hours. So naturally fashionable women dread looking like them. Maybe somewhere in the world there are a community who don't feel the need to look down on anybody, but I haven't met them yet, I'm sorry to say.

OMG, why would any black woman want to ruin her already beautiful skin with a bleaching cream? I have also heard about some black women who have had nose reductions. Why in God's name? Black women are naturally beautiful, the epitome of womanhood in my opinion. Their faces, hair, and skin are works of art. I see so many regal black women around me, and it boggles my mind why 'white beauty' is so overemphasized in America.

Light brown skin seems to very much be considered by many races these days as a thing of beauty. I'm sure you've met many white men who find very pale white woman to be unattractive. I for one don't have a prefrence when it comes to skin complection.

Two things are going on here: One, of the races, blacks have the widest variation of skin pigmentation-ranging from light tan to almost literally black skin. Therefore, functionally speaking, monikers are useful describing tools. Secondly, much of the description of race in America is influenced by the plantation - in my experience, only African-Americans use the phrases 'good skin' and 'bad skin.' Personally, I find the entire phraseology of description uninteresting - the person's character and behavior count for a lot more than how they look!

Historically, white women avoided the sun as well, so she was not blaming whites, she was telling it the way it was. Ironically now white women go out of their way to darken their skin by tanning, despite the health risks. It seems no matter what our racial background is, we still spend hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars and countless hours in front of the mirror trying to alter our natural beauty.

. There is no proof that a 'color-based slave hierarchy' (or that 'color-based social-networks') ever existed as common entities -- within the continental U.S. . http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Generation-Mixed/message/4154 . http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Generation-Mixed/message/4153 . This is because the chattel-slavery system that was once found on the antebellum-era, continental U.S. was NOT "color-based" (i.e. "racial") -- but rather -- it was actually "mother-based" (i.e. 'matrilineal'). . http://www.facebook.com/allpeople.gifts/posts/309460495741441 .
