I'm sure my family has black ancestry. My father has nappy black hair and a nose and lips that look pretty African. He almost looks biracial. My cousin uses black hair care products. I've never actually heard Jews try to deny black ancestry, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear it. It bothers quite a bit that there is so much animosity between African Americans and Jewish Americans. We have a lot in common, ancestrally and otherwise.

Regardless of what the condom ads on music television teach kids about sex, the content of music television teaches kids messages about sex that are highly disturbing. Many music videos objectify women; they portray women as people who are valuable only for their bodies and sexuality, as opposed to inner self-worth. And music television portrays sex as the be-all-end-all experience, which doesn't exactly encourage teens to wait until they are older and more responsible to try out the great temptation that is dangled before them. Lucy, of course it is the parents' responsibility to teach their kids about sexuality. But regardless, the media is one major place where people are socialized in this culture. A recent study shows that the average American teenager watches 3-4 hours of TV per day and spends about six hours a day with all forms of media (TV, radio, Internet, etc.). That's more time than people spend in full-time jobs!

I think women post more ads than respond to them in part because of the huge response rate. Because women know there are gobs of men for every woman in the personals, they know they can post their own ads, be specific about what they ask for, and get tons of responses. Another reason, I think, is that so many men are uncreative and sexist in their ad-writing. Many ads sound exactly the same, focus strongly on physical "requirements" and say so little about what the guy is really like that women are not inspired to answer them.

There are more men than women in general in the ads because women are taught that men are supposed to flock to us, and that we're not supposed to do any active things to find a companion, such as place an ad. Plus, in the case of Internet ads, there are more men than women on the Internet, so the pool of women is smaller to start with. When I was single, I placed a few ads (not on the net), and got piles of responses and met a few boyfriends that way. I was very specific, using "weed-out" words like "feminist" and "scholarly," and still got many good responses. I think more women should try it, as it is definitely a "buyer's market" for wome n- just be careful.

In our culture, we don't value older women as being attractive. Women are under incredible pressure to look young - almost as much as the pressure to be thin. While older men also aren't particularly valued, it's not as bad (especially if they have money). Look at all the movies with older men/younger women romances that have come out in the last few years. The one film with an older woman/younger man romance I can think of, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, was such a novelty that the age issue was actually the main theme of the movie. Not so in movies with older men and younger women. Read the personal ads, and you'll see lots of ads like, "Man, 40, looking for woman, 25-35." If that old. It's depressing.
