I was raised in a low to lower-middle class (or socioeconomic status as we call it nowadays family (formerly poor farmers). I have been fortunate as an adult in that I have been able obtain a Master's degree and great job. I think that the first person to respond has a good point. However, I must add that people from my class take great pride in doing things themselves. I have a better work ethic and more skills than many others of my generation because I was raised in a family that took care of things themselves. AND the greatest thing of all is that I know, no matter what happens, the skills I have, the things I learn how to do, can never be taken away from me. So, God forbid, if the money is to dry up, I will survive. I have a couple of rich friends who have been devastated by loss of family money. The funniest part is they don't even see themselves as rich! Now, they don't know what to do with themselves and are very depressed and angry. Living life as I have gives me a great feeling of peace and I wouldn't want to have been raised with money.

As this is supposed to be safe space where people can ask questions I won't be too harsh. First, I also make donations to organizations rather than individuals as I feel it is a safer way to help out. However, people become poor or are poor because people they count on die, they have had little support or opportunity in their lives, their house burned down, their business or farm went under, I could go on all day. Although this post intially made me want to scream I took a step back and thought that I hope you realize how fortunate you are not to know this answer or have experienced it first hand. I don't resent you for asking this question (or living a life where you didn't have to know this answer) but I do think you would learn volumes about life if you were to spend some time learning poor peoples' stories and getting to know them. Often they are amazingly sad stories but can be full of triumphs, fantastic relationships, and enormous efforts to overcome what they have faced.
