I think this is a regional thing, as I've been to several different parts of the country and have never heard day/night/evening/morning replaced with 'one' anywhere other than here.

I'm very young-looking for my age and small to fit, live in a city overriden with poverty and pan-handlers, so for the past couple of years, I've been an easy target. A particular gas station in my city sits on a street where most of the homeless people flock. Late one night, I went there to get gas when I was accosted by this one man, who looked like he needed a shower terribly, and asked me if I had a dollar to spare. I said no. And I really did not have a dollar on me. He gave me a sob story about how he hadn't had a bite to eat all day long. I said, 'All I have is a credit card, I'm sorry.' He persisted though. He said, 'You could go inside and use the ATM.' I said, 'Look, if you want to come inside with me, I'd be glad to buy you some food, but I'm not giving you my money.' He just sort of looked at me. I went inside, bought him a bag of chips. When I came back out and handed them to him, he just sort of glared at me, no thank you, nothing. He walked away into the darkness but I saw him drop the chips on the ground and just walk off. Since then, I have kept chips or some long-lasting non-perishable food like this in my car for this exact situation. It happens A LOT. If someone is truly homeless and pan-handling, they should never turn down a free meal. If a panhandler actually is homeless and in need, they need to learn to ask for the right things and accept the right answers. It's not my obligation to work long, hard hours to pay for someone else's misfortune. I was born with just as much money and opportunity as these. Unless you're rich by inheritance, it's not luck that you have what you have. It's hard work.
