I have been raised in the Catholic faith, however I have never received a satisfactory answer as to why Mary, the mother of Jesus, is continually referred to as 'ever-virgin'. I see a few issues with that statement that are troubling and contradictory. First, she was married to Joseph, and an unconsummated marriage is not a valid marriage in the Catholic faith and can be grounds for an annulment. Secondly, what does this say about the marital relationship if Mary is to be a role model? Is she better if she never had relations with Joseph? Are we lower, because as non-divine persons we have sexual feelings and actions? Finally, where in the Biblical tradtion is this derived from?
