Why do many teens (and pre-teens to a lesser extent) always try to be individual by attempting to fit in with others? For example, wearing a specific brand of clothes or drinking a certain soft drink. Individuality involves thinking for yourself.

That's the same as asking why adults wear suits to work. Because they are expressing an image. Teenagers wear what is in style, whether it is wearing baggy pants or drinking a certain type of drink. Why did people wear afros or bell-bottoms? Because it was in style.

Part of the reason is that hip-hop has a major influence over the style of dress and even the way teenagers speak. It is something new to this generation; they are people who can identify with our environment and can understand who we are. And, teenagers and most adults are very influenced by their peers. What others think matters to them, so if they aren't wearing Fubu or the new Jordans, they feel bad. When they grow to the stage where what others think does not matter to them, then they will really begin to express their own individuality.

Perhaps our attempts at achieving individuality stem from our need to find a place in society. Take, for example, any fictional book or TV series. You will see that each character has his or her own role, own piece of the social puzzle. Different personalities, by complementing each other, make up a healthy society. As a part of our maturing process, we see the need to fit into this society, and we try to do so by fabricating individualty. Another reason for this may be the need to belong to a particular group, which itself is a part of society. Wearing certain brands is like a label that displays your group.
