Do African Americans generally expect eventual betrayal from white people? Or do they simply see white people as naive about the nature of racism and, therefore, unaware of when they (whites) might be unintentionally offensive? Is it a survival mechanism learned from living with the constant, wearing effect of racism? Can an African-American ever let down his or her guard and trust a white person?

'Do African Americans generally expect eventual betrayal from white people?' - Yes. We expect that as a group you will eventually betray us, and we expect that our white 'friends' when in a group of other whites will succumb to peer pressure and join in with other whites against us if there is a racial issue. 'Or do they simply see white people as naive about the nature of racism and, therefore, unaware of when they (whites) might be unintentionally offensive?' Not 'or' try 'and'. What is so interesting is that after 400 years of white folks being racist and white folks today admitting that they were racist, white folks today have a complete disconnection with it. Like, 'well that was then, this is now, they were wrong but we dont do that anymore, ok, now lets be friends while we white folks continue to live off of the financial/social benefits our racist ancestors left us.' And of course any type of correction or repairing of those most obvious advantages are meant with scorn, ridicule and accusations that blacks cant make it without help..hell..white folks have had 400 years of help and continue getting it to this day. 'Is it a survival mechanism learned from living with the constant, wearing effect of racism?' Yup 'Can an African-American ever let down his or her guard and trust a white person?' - Yes Im sure some have and are having wonderful relationships, but I dont believe its the majority. If it were then we wouldnt be having this conversation and their wouldnt be a 'race problem'
