Why is it that people from outside the U.S. refer to all Americans as yankees? Within the U.S., only people from the northern and northeastern states are called that: In common US usage, unless you're talking about a sports team, the word yankee is almost always synonymous with 'northerner'. New York's professional baseball team (The New York Yankees) immediately comes to mind. Northern city= 'northern' name. I've known quite a few southerners who were outright confused when called yanks, or yankees. What caused this major difference in usage? It seems that very few people actually know about it.
