Why’d Adam do it?

The Bible seems to suggest that Adam and Eve were together when the snake tempted Eve. It's hard to understand why Adam would follow suit and disobey God. Was he so spellbound by Eve that he would disobey God?? It sounds somewhat unbelievable and unrealistic.

The Bible doesn't state for sure that Adam and Eve were near one another when she ate the forbidden fruit. It just says she did eat and gave to her husband, who did also eat. The Bible also doesn't say why Adam followed his wife. Many times I've heard people ask what if he had not partaken after she did. Would the world still have been plunged into sin? Only God knows. God knew that when He created Adam and Eve they were going to disobey Him because He gave them the will to choose. In knowing that, God also provided a way of escape, which is why He sent His Son Jesus Christ. Just because it sounds unbelievable doesn't mean it didn't happen.

The creation story is a wonderful myth that helps us understand who we are - fallible beings. As you imply, it makes no sense literally, but like the Greek myths, it is a tale of unawareness and then great loss, and the beginning of a journey of discovery.

Genesis 3:6 indicates that Eve gave fruit to Adam when he was with her. One translation reads: Afterward she gave some also to her husband when with her and he began eating it. In the 6+ translations I looked in there is no indication that Adam was with Eve at the moment the serpent tempted her. In fact, if you look in 2 Corinthians 11:3 and 1 Timothy 2:14, it's emphasized that Eve was the one who was seduced by the serpant. Once that happened, Eve was considered sinful and no longer perfect. In turn, she convinced Adam to eat the fruit also. Adam chose to follow Eve, showing that he cherished his relationship with her more than the one he had with God. Satan, the serpent, used Eve to tempt Adam. Unfortunately, Adam chose to disobey God just as Eve chose to disobey God. Surely, either you or someone you know has done something idiotic because a woman you loved asked you to. Conversely, women have done stupid things for guys because we love them. Obviously to us it seems silly that Adam did what he did. The same could have happened to Adam if the situation was switched. Why Satan chose Eve to 'attack' we don't know. What we do know is that Adam chose poorly and as such, we've inherited that sin, just as we inherit all sorts of traits from our parents, grandparents, and so on. Romans 5:12 It may sound unrealistic but remember we're looking at this after the fact. Hindsight bias is 20/20!

Before the act of 'eating the fruit,' Adam and Eve were innocent, naked and unashame. After the act, they sew fig leaves to cover up their sexual parts and not their mouth. Isn't this a strong clue as to why the fruit is so tempting? I believe that when God said 'Don't eat the fruit..' it means that 'Don't experience sexual intercourse until they are mature enough. A tree multiplies through its fruit but man multiplies through sexual love. Of course some may disagree. But we cannot deny that the desire for sex is that powerful.

I think you have two courses of action. You could accept the Bible as God's word, in which case everything in it is God's will and therefore possible. Or, take it a collection of Creationist myths cobbled together over centuries and reinterpreted by whatever group was in power to justify their own ends. Once you make your choice between these two opinions, it will save you many sleepless nights.

As another respondent noted, the Bible does not say that Adam and Eve were together when Eve sinned and ate the fruit. In fact, the Bible says Eve was deceived by the serpent, and they actually had a conversation, so they probably were not together at the time. And the fact that Adam disobeyed God is not really such a difficult thing to believe. People do it every day - people who believe in God and sin anyway. And think about the man who will risk his marriage, children, standing in the community, etc. for an adulterous relationship. Or the woman who will go against her parents' wishes and sometimes against her own better judgment in dating a particular guy who really isn't good for her. Or the couple that chooses to have unprotected sex knowing the risks of pregnancy, STDs and even AIDS. One day, a student may read in a history book about our generation and wonder how anyone could be so irresponsible and careless as to have unprotected sex knowing about all of these dangers. In retrospect, a lot of things seem hard to believe. In the 'heat of the moment,' though, our feelings can overtake our rational thoughts.

IMO, Satan was a catalyst. Sped up the inevitable. Take 2 children, forbid something, specify consequences, then leave them alone. As to why follow Eve, excuse me, she was his wife. His 'help meet', his only human companion. And God gave a command to all life: Be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth. Hard to do if you're alone. If you continue reading Genesis, you'll find where Adam and Eve rejoice in their fall: If we had not fallen, we would never have had seed...(that's CHILDREN for those who don't get it) Thanks, Adam and Eve, for allowing me to be born.

Have you ever been convinced to do something that you know in your heart is wrong? I find that I sometimes do things contrary to what God wants, and we all have, including Adam. Adam was human just like us, and was given free will to make his own decisions. Adam's sin didn't have anything to do with Eve's looks. I don't think Adam's story is unbelievable or unrealistic.

A Jewish midrash speculates that Adam 'had engaged in his natural functions [in other words, intercourse] and then fallen asleep,' so that he was not present during the serpent's conversation with Eve and presumably unaware that the fruit given to him by Eve came from the forbidden tree. Since God told ADAM [not Eve] 'From the Tree of the Knowing of Good and Evil, you are not to eat from it; for on that day that you eat from it, you must die, yes die', if Eve alone had eaten, she would have knowledge of good and evil [and the realization she was mortal, compelling her to make choices about good and evil], and Adam would have remained happily ignorant and immortal. At a more fundamental level, it can be argued that it is the knowledge of mortality itself that is essential to understanding, in any real sense, the difference between good and evil. Could an omniscent God really have expected humans created in his image to be satisfied with less knowledge than they were capable of obtaining? Were Adam and Eve not justified in engaging in religious disobedience of God's command? Is not greater knowledge with mortality more valuable than ignorant immortality? Would not most intelligent beings choose what Socrates called an 'examined life' with mortality over an unexamined life without end?

Adam did not deliberately disobey God. God created him with no sense of right or wrong. Before he ate of the fruit there was no sin, so how could he be intentionally disobedient? God gave adam two trees. One he could eat of, and the other he couldn't. God gave adam free will to choose. He choose the Tree of knowledge of good and evil. Satan did not make eve eat of the tree. He stood there and tried to persua her to do it. She chose to do it on her own and thought it was of good nature(Genesis 3:6) God did not create us as robots. He allowed us, and does allows us, to make our own choices. The story is found in Genenis chapter 2-3, just in case anyone was wondering.

i'm a muslim this is the story in our holy book the koraan: satan told adam that if he eats from that tree he'll stay forever in heaven and he kept justifing that it'll be alright if he ate from it and so on until both him and eve ate from it together, once they did their clothes came off and they kept tearing the trees leaves to cover themselves and God put them on earth so that they ask forgivness and worship him ,thier punishment was going down from heaven to earth but God forgave them ;this is my english translation of this verse in koraan'so adam recieved from his God some words(ie.how to ask for forgivness ,as God teached him everything)then God forgave him ,for He is the Forgivor and the Blessor'. we muslims belive that this story is always repeated among everyone of us ,we sin ,we ask for forgivness(and mean it of course!) and ALLAH forgives us ..this is just another perspective of the adam and eve story
