Why is it that many Jewish people who immigrate to Israel always claim cultural elements from their old country as exclusively theirs? For example, I've heard that many Yemeni songs were introduced in Israel as part of the Judaeo-Yemeni culture, whereas many people in Yemen can assure you that these are non-denominational folk tunes that were almost certainly not invented by Jews. The same applies to many dishes, art forms and traits gained from other countries. Do Jews in Israel feel ashamed of recognizing the part of their soul that is Egyptian, Yemeni, Polish or French, or do they always have to be Judaeo-whatever?
