To black women: I was wondering how long it took you to do your hairstyles, and how many different kinds do you have? I have always wanted to have hair like African Americans, but I am white. I love the look of that kind of hair.

On behalf of black women everywhere, thank you for the compliment. The length of time it takes depends on the hairstyle, of course. If you would like to try a particular style, I suggest going to a black hair salon. Contrary to what many think, these stylists are trained to work with all types of hair. They always have stacks of hairstyle magazines around, and they will work with you to achieve the look you want. A word of caution: don't try to attain an 'afro' texture, it'll probably ruin your hair. Stick with the straight or braided styles.

I would need to write an encyclopedia to properly respond to your question. There are so many different hair textures in the black population, and so many different styles! Many black women straighten their hair, either with a hot comb (similar to the curling iron) or with chemicals. These two methods produce different looks. Ladies who wear their hair natural (unstraightened) may cut it very short, or let it grow long and gather it into braids or buns. You still see the occasional giant Afro, like Angela Davis used to wear. Now she has dreadlocks, another popular natural style, where the hair is washed and conditioned, but never combed, so over time the natural spirals tighten into long ropes. Some of the very elaborate braided styles that you see have extra hair added in to provide length. I find all hair interesting - it fascinates me that there are so many different colors and textures.

Thank you for being concerned. We have many hairstyles because we have so many hair textures. We have black women (not biracial) who have naturally curly or naturally straight hair who can wear straight styles and then wet it and make curly styles and interchange to the so-called nappy styles if they desire. We have braids, which are popular in black and white culture. It takes a really long time to do braiding if the woman doesn't have a weave. The time frame ranges from one to 14 hours, depending on the type of braid. Again, thanks for the compliment. I also admire white women's hair, because you guys don't have to put a lot of time into it and it still turns out beautiful. We black women have to put a lot of time into our hair. In the end, women of all colors have beautiful hair.
