I have faced the exact same response but from a different situation. I am an Engineer who after quiting a perfectly good engineering job took a job at a sporting goods store until I found a job I really wanted. I was totally amazed how people treat employees of retail stores. I was in my mid-twenties and looked at as a dumb jock, that do anything else. This was my first and only retail job. It sure changed the way I interact with people when I am shopping.
