To women: What do you think when a man offers to buy you a drink? Do you think it's a way to get you in bed?

As naive as it may sound, I think it's polite and charming.

I do think it's a way to get a woman into bed; maybe not that second, but eventually. It means he's at least sexually attracted to you and trying to flatter you. I feel guilty letting men buy me drinks, so I don't do it much.

I go out a lot, so here's my take: If a guy just bounces up out of nowhere and offers to buy me a drink, I don't think his motives are too cool, and I refuse. It is different if someone starts a conversation with me and in the course of the conversation or after dancing offers me a drink or even another one after that. Even at that point, his motive doesn't matter, because I'm the one with control over that. I have had a drink with someone I've talked to or danced with and then went off to join my girlfriends. I just enjoy the gift without thinking too much about it. It's not a prelude to sex, nor even a prelude to staying in the person's company the entire evening.

My experience has been that men expect an immediate return on any money they put out for a woman. I'd only allow a boyfriend to pay for drinks, dinners, anything else, not someone I was justing meeting. If a woman thinks the man offering to buy might be someone she's interested in, she should say something like, 'I'll get my own, but let's talk.' It makes it clear that she reserves the right to decide he's not for her and to do so without having 'taken advantage' of his sexual interest in her.
