While shopping one day I saw what I thought was a cheap looking item but with a large price tag. I commented that the item was 'a gyp,' a term I'd learned during childhood and have always used. The friend I was with freaked out and said that I shouldn't say that because it's a derogatory term for Gypsies. Is this true? Is using the word 'gyp' to refer to something that's cheap or a rip-off really offensive to Gypsies?
