Rob S.MemberFrom watching the Australian soap opera Neighbors, I have noticed the way some of the men in it drink beer. If it's bottled beer, they have the bottle in a plastic beaker, only a bit shorter that the bottle, and only a bit wider in circumference than the bottle. Is this an Austrailian fashion of drinking beer?User Detail :

M.K.ParticipantThose holders, or 'comfies,' are more than just a fashion item. They contain a liquid that is super-frozen, so that the beer separates off into a high alcohol layer over a watery layer. The top layer is drunk, and the remainder ('gobbacks') thrown away ... or passed onto an unsuspecting mate!User Detail :

Trust no managerMemberGidday Robert. The plastic beaker you're referring to is a foam holder that insulates the bottle and keeps it cold. It stops the heat of the hand, and the heat of the Australian climate from warming the beer. Australia is a very hot country, and New Zealand is pretty warm, too. It's probably because of the climate that beer is traditionally drunk cold, and that's preferably ice cold, both in Australia and New Zealand, not warm as it's traditionally drunk in the United Kingdom. Most Aussies (Australians) and Kiwis (New Zealanders) find drinking warm beer about as appealing as drinking boiled cola!User Detail :

CHParticipantI'm not sure if it's the same thing, not having seen the 'beakers' you mention, but in the United States we frequently use coozies/cosies/koozies (pick your preferred spelling) to hold a can or bottle of beer. Most are soft foam cylinders that you fit a can or bottle snugly into with the goal of keeping your hand warm and the bottle/can cold (as most prefer their beer here). There are also sleeker models made out of wetsuit-type material with a zipper up the side, specifically for bottles. If you ever drink beer cold out of a bottle or can, they are indispensable.User Detail :

AndrewParticipantIt's not a beaker but a foam rubber thing that insulates the bottle. It keeps the beer cold and your fingers warm.User Detail :

Jane20956ParticipantI've read what the other people have written & they are right (except for that David guy-I think he's on crack). In Melbourne they're commonly referred to as 'stubbie holders' and they're made of foam.User Detail :
