I know that having been brought up Catholic, we were always taught that everyone else was wrong and therefore going to hell. I don’t recall anyone differentiating betwenn Christians and people of other faiths. Everyone but Catholics were wrong. I don’t know why a Protestant would want to adopt a Catholic view, but I can assure you that the Catholic leaders WILL NOT change their view to include Protestant type beliefs (ie-preists marrying) nor will they be willing to share their money and therefore their power with another Christian religion. Although I am obviously disenchanted with the religion my parents chose, I still am a Christian, but there is room in my personal belief for growth and change. Hope this answers at least one aspect of your question.
