In another posting someone mentioned that U.S. blacks are migrating from the North to the South in large numbers. If so, why would blacks want to go to a part of the country with such a history of oppression toward them? Even today, there is more racism in the South than elsewhere in the United States.

I am an African American who moved to the South (Florida) from up North (Ohio), and my move had nothing to do with historical happenings. Times change, people change. If you want to know the truth, it’s a lot nicer here. There is still racism, but I have found very few situations of it. I am a hairdresser and work in an all-white salon. No one has ever doubted my skills, nor were they skeptical because of my skin color. Another good reason we move to the south is that it is much warmer. Black people don’t like the cold and snow. There are also a lot of military moves in the South. It’s one of the first places they send you. I hope this helps you understand. Nowadays, no one researches the places they want to live (at least not historically). They move mostly for the economic opportunities, the weather or just to have the experience.

I am an African-American woman who recently moved to a Southern state for economic reasons. There is much more opportunity in Southern states than Northern ones. Also, a lot of companies are relocating their main branches to Southern states. Secondly, do you think I would really let whites intimidate me so much that I would allow them to control where I live? This is a new day, and I cannot do anything about the past. True, there is still racism in the South, but it’s also in the North.

Maybe for the same reasons anybody else moves from the frozen wastelands to the balmy South: jobs, climate, less taxes, no Kennedys. Having been born and raised in Ohio but having spent my adult life in Texas, I haven’t noticed a lot of difference in how the whites I associate with talk about or treat minorities. I heard just as many ‘off color’ remarks and ran into just as many ignorant racists in Ohio as I do in Texas. In the South, the historical effects of racism are undeniable, but I have noticed more willingness to deal openly with it than in the North, where they pretend it never existed.

How else do you deal with a problem? You confront it. If you don’t, they think they’ve one. If we let them have the territory then what? Our voices have to heard. Cut it out from the source. They are only challenged when they know you exist. If they see you everyday, they know you exist.

I think that blacks along with whites have the right to move where ever they want to. Maybe because of the fact that there is more jobs and the weather is better. Nobody has any say in anything. The South has many opportunities and I think that people have a right to do what they please no matter their skin color.

Yes, there are a lot of historically negative things from the South, and there are those in the North as well. And just like the North, there are a lot of beautiful things, too. Have you been to New Orleans during Mardi Gras? Have you been to historically black areas in Atlanta? Have you seen the wonderful landscape in Savannah, Ga.? There are a lot of good reasons to move to the South. I have family that live in Jesup, Ga., a small town not far from Savannah, where everyone knows everybody by their first name, people say hi to you on the street, there are large houses and barely no violent crimes. These are very good reasons to move to the South, whether you’re black, white or any other race. And yes, you might have to deal with racism and historical references to black slavery, but to be honest, you’re going to get that anywhere. Hopefully you’ve noticed that racism extends outside the South, and often is worse in other areas.
