BridgetMemberWhy don’t people accept interracial dating?

BrentMemberDang if I know. I’m white; my fiance is black. Methinks that they’re afraid that you’ll ‘sully the gene pool’… whatever the heck that means. I’ve read one site reference the idea that human races are like dog races, and they should be kept ‘pure’. I know that, in trying to keep Dalmatians purebred, they’re so inbred that deafness, underslung jaws, and other birth defects are now common. On the other hand, when your gene pool is deep and broad enough, you’re extremely unlikely to get any recessive birth defects.

Danielle27242MemberI think there could be a few reasons why: A lot of older people still have some ‘leftover’ prejudices that were more widely accepted in their day, and some parents don’t want their children to do it because they want to protect them from the inevitable hardships they will have (i.e. others not accepting them, children who don’t know where they ‘fit’, etc.). I think the most common reason, though, is a subtle prejudice that most people have: the idea of ‘I’m not prejudiced, but I don’t want MY daughter bringing home a black man.’ It’s sad that people assume the worst of a race rather than taking people on a case-by-case basis.

BethMemberInterracial dating is still a taboo subject. I mean, South Carolina just repealed a law a couple years ago saying blacks and whites couldn’t marry. The law hadn’t been enforced for decades, but the bickering between the Senate and House members showed that someone still believed that my husband and I don’t belong together. I believe some day people who think my family is unusual will go away and we will be the ‘nice couple down the street’ instead of ‘you know, the black guy with the blond wife.’ It seems you are dealing with some close-minded people in your life. Expand your horizons and meet some new people. There are plenty of folks who believe that variety is the spice of life.

terri24704Membernothing’s wrong with mixing. the people who think it’s wrong are just too stupid to understand how stupid they are.

QuincyMemberThis is an excellent question. I myself am involved with in interracial relationship. I have several friends that are also involved. Some people are able to accept it while others aren’t. The fact of the matter is that a lot of family members and friends are worried about their own reputation. They wonder how society will view, and another thing is that some people are holding back their fantasy. I have a very close white female friend who is engaged, however her secret fantasy is to have sex with a black man. However, she feels that interracial dating is wrong. Go figure…….
