My mother works for a company with a large chain of supermarket stores. She is black and the branch where she works has mostly black employees. But she had a white, male co-worker who was voluntarily transferring to a branch with mostly white employees. This white guy was known to date black women and a few days before his transfer my mom was joking with him saying that he ‘won’t be able to get anymore black meat over at the other branch, only white meat’. They both laughed about it but a white, female employee overheard them and she reported my mom to the management for making a racially disparaging comment. My mom thinks that she did not disparage either race with that comment and is angry at that white lady for bringing management into it. The guy had laughed at the joke at the time and now says he can’t even remember it. Yet the white female co-worker said that she was offended. Was my mom at fault? The way I see it, my mom was just teasing him that he won’t have as many black women (his preference) around him. She wasn’t saying anything bad about white women. What do others think about this?
